Why Am I Still Thinking About My Ex?
Just because a relationship has ended doesn't mean you stop thinking about the person. They may have been part of your everyday life for years. You were used to talking to them, making plans together, or sharing things that happened during your day.
Sometimes you keep thinking about what went wrong, what you could have done differently, or why things happened the way they did. You may still have feelings about the breakup, or miss parts of the relationship even though you know you don't want to go back.
And sometimes it's simply a habit. Your mind has been going back to this person for a long time, and it keeps doing it even though the relationship is over.
Not Wanting Them Back Doesn't Mean You Never Think About Them
You can be sure that ending the relationship was the right decision and still miss the person. You might miss having someone to talk to, certain things you did together, or even the future you once imagined with them.
Sometimes people take these feelings as a sign that they made a mistake. But missing someone doesn't necessarily mean you want to be with them again. You can miss parts of a relationship without wanting the relationship itself.
And you don't have to convince yourself that everything about the relationship was bad in order to let it go.
What Keeps the Thoughts Going?
Sometimes you keep thinking about your ex because you're still trying to understand what happened. You go over old conversations, wonder what you missed, or imagine how things might have turned out if you'd said or done something differently.
Other times, you may be keeping the connection going without quite realizing it. You check their social media, look at old messages, or find yourself wondering whether they're thinking about you too.
And sometimes a thought just comes up because something reminds you of them. A song, a place, or something that happens during your day can bring back memories and feelings, even when you weren't thinking about the relationship at all.
What Can Help You Stop Feeding the Loop?
If you notice that you're thinking about your ex again, try to pay attention to what happens next. Do you start going over the relationship, looking for answers, or imagining conversations that never happened?
There's a difference between remembering something and spending another hour trying to figure it out. You don't have to push the thought away, but you also don't have to follow it wherever it takes you.
It may also help to notice things you do that bring the relationship back into your day, such as checking their social media or rereading old messages. And try to spend time doing things that have nothing to do with your ex, even if your thoughts still wander back occasionally.
Letting Go Emotionally
Sometimes the problem isn't just that you keep thinking about your ex. You may still feel hurt, angry, disappointed, or sad about what happened. Even when you know the relationship is over, those feelings may still be there.
You might also be holding on to hopes you once had for the relationship, or struggling with the idea of being alone. Sometimes what you miss isn't so much the person, but what the relationship meant to you.
Letting go doesn't mean forgetting the person or pretending the relationship wasn't important. It means reaching a point where the relationship no longer has the same emotional hold on you.
When You May Want Help
Sometimes time and the usual advice aren't enough. You may have stopped checking your ex's social media, filled your days with other activities, and made a real effort to move forward. But you still find yourself thinking about the relationship more than you want to.
Maybe certain memories bring up strong feelings, or you notice that the past relationship is affecting how you respond to people now.
If this keeps happening despite your efforts to change it, getting some help may be worth considering. You don't have to wait until the problem becomes overwhelming.
Hypnotherapy and Private Sessions
When someone comes to see me because they can't stop thinking about an ex, I want to understand what's keeping them connected to that relationship. Is it something they still feel hurt or angry about? Are there unanswered questions, regrets, or hopes they haven't let go of?
Sometimes the person understands perfectly well why the relationship ended, but the feelings haven't changed. We can explore what still brings up those feelings and what may be keeping them going.
Depending on what we find, I may use hypnotherapy, NLP, parts work, or other approaches. I don't follow the same process with everyone. The goal isn't to erase memories or make the relationship seem unimportant. It's to resolve what is still affecting you so you can move forward without being pulled back into it.
